Aiki Tora Ryu Overview

Aiki Tora Ryu (A.T.R.), founded in 1992 by Grand Master Neal J. Hummerstone, is a hybrid martial art system comprised of a array of the more potent AiKi styles of Budo, filtered down to only the ultra-efficient components resulting in a consummate form of Martial Art. The main instructional goal of A.T.R. AIKIDO is to allow individuals to learn a complex defensive system in a relatively simplistic manner. The A.T.R. system is a highly effective defensive system that uses an easy to learn set of universal principles and concepts that enables the mind’s ability to effectively react and deal with adverse confrontational situations when high stress, confusion or disorientation is involved.

The philosophy behind A.T.R. is to close the mind from complex thought processes and in turn, minimize body reactionary gap by incorporating a basic system to act as a conduit to applying various martial art techniques and any other defensive or counter actions. Applying the A.T.R system in a violent situation will dramatically increase the chances of survival. The combination of using the basic set of principles and concepts of self-defense along with effective martial arts technique is what Master Hummerstone calls the S. E. A. L. of approval for self preservation. The acronym’s meaning is Simple, Efficient, Adaptable, and Logical.

  • SIMPLE in terms of application and actions that the mind is able to effectively carry out in high stress environments;
  • EFFICIENT in terms of movement, maximizing power, and the conservation of body energy;
  • ADAPTABLE in the terms of being able to deal with all violent situations in all environments and settings;
  • LOGICAL in the terms of recognizing what type of defensive action to take at a moments notice.

Aiki Tora Ryu evolves...
Aiki Tora Ryu and International Combative Survival Tactics (ICST)

After the many years of teaching Aki Tora Ryu and international instruction of military and police defensive tactics, Master Hummerstone has recently been inspired by new revelations in his ongoing analysis of martial arts philosophies. The result is a new evolution to his vision of the ultimate universal martial art system. Master Hummerstone’s new vision is being developed into courseware instruction that combines his original philosophies, principles and concepts of Aki Tora Ryu, with additional focus on elements more in line with current trends and realities of today's society, with the ever-growing threats experienced in all walks of life. The ICST courseware embodies the hybrid of teachings of the principles and concepts from Aki Tora Ryu, with proven combative tactics and techniques for street survival. The new system is designed to be effective in any situation, any place. The course focuses on an individuals’ ability to defend and survive against single and multiple attackers using anything at hand as a weapon, or nothing at all.

This new course is called “International Combative Survival Tactics” (ICST) and is now offered in modular course format in limited class sizes. The course trains individuals to act successfully during high stress, unexpected circumstances, using open hand martial arts techniques, traditional, environmental or improvised weapons, and firearms. The course stresses “One Mind - Any Weapon” while depending on NO weapon. ICST is optimally designed for the advanced martial arts practitioners, professionals, and military and police officers. Students of ICST will utilize all the positive aspects and techniques of any previous martial arts and combat training as an enhancement to the ICST class experience.
